Journal of a tour in England, Scotland, Flanders, Germany, Switzerland, and France, in the year 1840, volume second, 1840 August 7-October 18.

This volume of his journal starts in Germany as he is leaving Cologne for Coblenz. He travels on the Rhine River, stopping briefly in Frankfort-am-Main, Mayence, Mannheim, Heidelberg (describes castle ruins), Strasburg (visits the cathedral), and Freyburg. In Switzerland, he goes to Schaffhausen, Zurich (visits the cathedral, describes a sunset with the alps in the distance), Lucerne, Berne, Thun, Interlachen, and Geneva. In France, he visits Burgundy, Dijon, Paris (as guest preacher), Versailles (describes in detail), and Rouen. He then spends two weeks in London before sailing home at the end of a six and one-half month journey. In addition to describing the people and places, he liberally quotes from Lord Byron.
